Writing Scottish Parliamentary History, c.1500–1707

In the 19th and 20th centuries, scholarship on Scottish parliament was heavily informed by a narrative of ‘failure’, directed at explaining why its members voted it out existence in 1707. Part problem tendency to see any deviation from practices Westminster as weakness. By reappraising terms utility those who comprised membership, notably titled peerage monarch, historians have revealed adaptability inventiveness, especially times crisis. This essay considers how fresh approaches both what constituted parliamentary record can – cannot be found within exerted transformative influence our understanding parliament's evolving role political life. Although Reformation crisis 1560 accession ruling house Stewart English throne 1603 effected profound changes culture, this emphasises sustained legitimacy relevance, part, drawing past ideas. Historians become more attentive recent years means which social groupings ordinarily excluded formal activity were nonetheless able engage with, influence, proceedings. Gaps remain knowledge, however. Some periods been intensively studied than others, while certain aspects culture are understudied. The writing history will continue offer rich possibilities future.
